about nineteen days
nineteen days started in 2008 as a collaborative project between friends and fellow bloggers amy and leila .
We are both members of the Bahá’í Faith—a world religion that has as its fundamental purpose the unification of all the peoples of the world. You can learn more about the Bahá’í Faith here.
As Bahá’ís we are enjoined to fast from sunrise to sunset for nineteen days, from March 2nd to March 20th.
It is essentially a period of meditation and prayer, of spiritual recuperation, during which the believer must strive to make the necessary readjustments in his inner life, and to refresh and reinvigorate the spiritual forces latent in his soul. Its significance and purpose are, therefore, fundamentally spiritual in character.
–Shoghi Effendi —
Now in its second year, nineteen days is a way to share with each other and all of you moments of our early mornings and early evenings for the nineteen days of the Bahá’í Fast. We will be waking up before dawn to have breakfast, pray and prepare for the day. We will be sitting down at sunset to break the fast, pray and reflect on the day. Both of us will also include inspirational passages from the Bahá’í Sacred Writings in our daily postings and, at times, our own personal thoughts.
This year we will be adding a third dimension to the project – every day we have invited a different Bahá’í photographer from around the world to join us in sharing his/her fasting experience and photographs with all of us.
You can read all about our guest photographers here.
We are so glad to have you here, and we’d love to hear from you – so don’t hesitate to leave a comment!
this is an awesome idea!
i look forward to seeing how this turns out! much coolness and stuff!
and i think i should have commented somewhere else.
nobody ever checks the “about” pages anymore.
your comment did not go unnoticed! Thank you for stopping by and saying hello!
Truly an unusual concept since Sydney gets to start fasting about 19 hours ahead of Seattle. In Australia the days are getting shorter and in Seattle they lengthen. It all makes for a different feel to the Fast.
Dear Amy and Leila,
this is a wonderful idea, to make this pictorial journey through the Fast, I love your pictures. It encourages me to also pursue this art.
warmest greetings from Switzerland

Your Nineteen Days have become a part of mine. I check your site each morning, sometimes use a photo as screensaver, and now intend to finally buy a digital camera, so that I will be prepared for next year to do something similar. (We have had a huge amount of snow in Montreal – so different from Sydney and New York – My photos would be quite white!)
What this and the similar blogs show me to my surprise, is how sunrise and sunset vary around the world, how we all observe in our diverse ways, etc.etc. Another example of unity in diversity.
With thanks,
Ilona
Wow, what an ispiration. I have been asking people around the world via bahaigroups.ning.com to share reflections of the fast for 1, curiosity of how people experience this wonderful gift and 2, or inspiration for a possible book about the fast. I am truely in awe of this initiative you have set up together. What a wonderful way to support one another across the globe. The photos are so personal and yet so accessible to everyone. Thank you for doing this.

This blog was brought to my attention from a friend of mine and before today, I have never heard of the Baha’i faith. It’s so intriguing and I wish you all the best on your fasts! I have to add that the pics on this blog rock! I’ll be following your progress with great interest…
Thank you so much for this wonderful gift! It truly makes my fast this year. I’m all covered up i work and find it hard to get to the fundamentally spiritual part so if it wasn’t for your website I’d just be hungry
Thank you for all the encouragement and inspiration.
love,
Maria
